What does Adopting with TBCR look like?

Important Note on Adoptions

To support healthy social development and prevent single kitten syndrome, Thalia Barn Cat Rescue only adopts kittens in pairs or into homes that already have a young, playful cat. This ensures they receive the companionship and stimulation they need.

Occasionally, we have older cats who clearly prefer to be the only pet. These are rare exceptions and will be noted in their profiles.

FeLV/FIV Testing Policy

At Thalia Barn Cat Rescue, the health and well-being of our cats and kittens is our top priority. However, we do not routinely snap test all kittens for FeLV or FIV for these reasons:

  • Age-Related Accuracy: Kittens under 6 months can test falsely positive due to maternal antibodies.

  • Cost Considerations: As a volunteer-run rescue, we prioritize critical care like vaccinations, spay/neuter, and urgent medical needs.

  • Case-by-Case Testing: We will test if:

    • A kitten shows symptoms of illness

    • A littermate tests positive

    • The mother is FeLV/FIV positive

    • The adopter requests testing (fee may apply)

  • Low Transmission Risk: FeLV typically requires prolonged close contact. Healthy kittens housed together are at low risk unless exposed to a known carrier.

Thank you for understanding and supporting responsible, informed rescue practices.
